WALK 221 – 221 KM – 5 DAYS – 1 MISSION
June 25 – June 29This walk marks my own personal quest to make a difference. All proceeds raised will help build capacity and promote mental health effectively in the London community. You might not know me but I’d like to introduce myself. Born and raised in London Ontario, I am an individual striving to encourage people to care for people. Although I have not worked in the mental health or medical field, I have a deep understanding of the life experiences that have shaped me over the past 26 years and how they can relate to the other billion humans on this planet. Ever since I was a kid I told my parents that I would walk to my cottage, approximately 221 KM, located between Sauble Beach and Tobermory Ontario. While I have always suffered from depression, 2017 brought on a new wave of emotions. Life had me feeling what I can best describe as “just plain weird.” In 10 years I’ve never felt so far out of my comfort zone and feeling alone during it all. While I can acknowledge and repeatedly thank the fantastic support system that I have, at the end of the day I felt as though it was me, myself and I. I am still struggling with mental health and I understand that I will be for my whole life but finding different outlets have been my savior! Just before the holidays I decided 2018 was the year I’d walk to my cottage. On June 25 my walking partner and I will begin a journey with the intention to get people connected and raise funds for a great organization. Thanks for all your support. – Anne UPDATE: On Monday June 25th I will begin my journey on the North West corner of Victoria Park at 8AM (Richmond and Central). Although I am not seeking individuals to walk the entire journey, I encourage those interested to come out to walk the first 1KM. We will be walking North up Richmond from Central Ave to Cheapside Street at which point I will continue this journey independently.
PEARS is a six week series for young people ages 12 – 17. Registration is open for the winter session. The winter session starts Thursday, January 18th and you can register now by contacting Barbara at email@example.com. As a firm believer in launching a discourse amongst youth, Connect for Mental Health is proud to partner with the Psychological Education, Awareness, and Reduction of Stigma (PEARS) mental health education program alongside King’s University College. PEARS teaches youth to be self-aware when faced with mental health issues while providing a strong toolbox of knowledge filled with coping skills. Through six lessons, the program creates mindfulness and reduces stigmatization. The program is comprehensive and research-based while remaining interactive and engaging. As we aim to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues, PEARS is a strong program that provides attitudinal changes and helps future generations live healthy. Recovery in mental health refers to living a satisfying, hopeful, and contributing life, even when a person may be experiencing ongoing symptoms of a mental health problem or illness. In a recovery-oriented system, service providers engage in shared decision-making, offering a range of services and supports to fully meet a person’s goals and needs. Recovery is different for each individual and is particularly unique when working with youth. The video, Food for thought: A youth perspective on recovery-oriented practice attempts to break down what youth see as some of the core principles of recovery-oriented mental health and addiction services. The video uses the metaphor of a restaurant interaction to provide an out-of-the-box, light-hearted demonstration of the key concepts of recovery-oriented practice. The video is not intended to have all the answers, but to provoke creative thought and start a discussion among service providers about how they could better support and work with youth in a recovery-oriented mental health and addiction setting.
